The best of the contemporary art of 2008

Work of Lucio Muñoz in the exhibition Silencis

Since we are of memoirs of the best thing and the worst thing, in Art Spain we have selected 5 facts of the contemporary art of 2008 that he is worth while remembering:

1. This position touches the exhibition Silencis in the Monastery of Siloes, that Carlos Franco assembled 24 Spanish contemporary artists, between them to Antoni Tàpies, José Maria Sicilia, Joan Miró, José Manuel Broto, Esteban Vicente, Miquel Barceló, Cristino de Vera, Susana Solano, Albert Rafols-Casamada, Martin Chirino, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Sergi Aguilar, Sergio Belinchón, Manuel Rivera, Eduardo Chillida, Manolo Millares, Juan Carlos Savater, Lucio Muñoz, Miguel Ángel Blanco, Carmen Laffón, Gustavo Torner, Xavier Mascaró and Francesc Ruiz. This way 8 years of exhibition were celebrated in Siloes.

2. The exhibition of Elizabeth Peyton in New York, the young and international contemporary artist that more we like, both in the pictorial language and in the subject-matter that it tackles.

3. The exhibition Machines and Souls of the Museum Queen Sophia, who assembled for the first time in this space, to the creators of the contemporary art and the new technologies, beginning a big way for the institutional legitimization of the average art, net art, digital art and vídeoarte.

4. The retrospective of Juan Muñoz in the Guggenheim Bilbao, which there assembled big part of the work of this so valued Spanish artist.

5. The exhibition Works Graph 10 The Country in the gallery Marlborough, with works in artist's engraving as Eduardo Arroyo, José Manuel Broto, Rafael Canogar, Martín Chirino, Juan Genovés, Luis Gordillo, Cristina Iglesias, Antonio López García, Jaume Plensa and Manolo Valdés.

The Spanish Unformalism: principal exponents

tapies211.jpg

Gray with two forms. Antoni Tápies

The Unformalism is a current that arises in France and then it would spread over the whole Europe, exercising a very strong influence in Spain. The diverse theories existentialists that Jean Paul Sartre and Martín Heidegger raised, highlighting the finished freedom of the artist to express his experiences and emotions would revolutionize the art in the middle of the XXth century.

This pictorial movement was opposed to the existing tendencies, like the cubism, where the geometric rigor is the essential part of the works. On the contrary, the unformalism pushes it back completely, doing without the formal will and proposing the creation as the rhythms that our instinct dictates us, capturing it in spots of color and big quantity of lines intermingled between themselves.

Artistic movements: Group Step

Artists of The Step

After the Second World war, Spain was plunged in a finished social and political chaos, and also, the artistic world in general was in a lethargy that lasted already 20 years. In 1957, there appears a group of artists belonging to the unformalism, which broke this coldness, and returned him to the country the place deserved in the world of the art.

It is a question of the group Step, where a set of young artists was appearing with a big international impulse. The members of the same one were: José Ayllón, Rafael Canogar, Martín Chirino, Manuel Conde, Luis Feito, Juana Francés, Manuel Millares, Manuel Rivera, Antonio Saura, Pablo Serrano, Antonio Suárez and Manuel Viola.

Interesting work of Manuel Viola to auction

Manuel Viola per moments looks like a damned painter. Charter member of the “Group Step”, I join artists like Antonio Saura, Canogar, Feito, Thousands or Antonio Suárez, his work is represented in museums of the whole world, between which he emphasizes the Museum Guggenheim of New York.

The Viola quotation is full of ups and downs. First of all for the big quantity of doubtful and even false work that has gone out to the market in the last years, and secondly for the tremendous oscillations of his auctions in sale and public appraisal, which prevent from going over to a consensus tendency.

This Oil on Tablex “Without title” that Ansorena auctions next June 19 is an interesting work, of good proportions for his sale, of not too late epoch and at an exceptional starting price; 1.000€ a good opportunity for the Viola collectors and the fighter - bargain.
